John Berry Meacham

The Reverend James Berry Meacham tried to uplift the job opportunities for African Americans, by teaching Black children to read and write, defying state law.  Meacham also organized a "Freedom School" on a Mississippi River steamboat.
His classes were held in a "floating school" in the middle of the Mississippi River, probably to avoid violating land based Black Codes.
